Incandescent

Out of the electric power used to power the bulb just 10% produces light and the other 90% in produces heat as a by product of the light. Halogen light bulbs generate even more heat when compared with the light they emit.
There are more efficient bulbs that produce a higher percentage of light and at a lower cost. There are even low voltage deck lighting sets.

Fluorescent
Light emitted from fluorescent tubes are often found in kitchens, garages and workshops. They not only provide an even source of illumination, but they have a long life and they consume a fraction of the electricity need to produce a comparable amount of incandescent light.
Fluorescent lights are manufactured in a variety sizes for many uses. You may have seen the compact spiral designs that are made to fit into the light fixtures normally used for incandescent light bulbs. In most cases they generate an equal amount of illumination for less cost.
Some fluorescents are designed to produce illumination that comes very close to matching natural light. You will see why that is important in fluorescent lighting in a moment.
LED
LED lighting is popping up everywhere. It is used in traffic lights, auto and truck tail lights, many types of electronic equipment and even flashlights.
LED stands for "Light Emitting Diodes. This light sources is usually found as groups of tiny light emitting glass capsules. This type of lighting is slowly moving into home lighting.
LED lights generate a more concentrated beam of light and not the broad light we are accustomed to with incandescent and fluorescent sources. LED is known for providing ample light for specific areas and at a lower cost than other sources.
We will see many new uses for LED lighting in the future and some of it will be useful in the home.
Full Spectrum Illumination
Research tells us that full spectrum illumination provides a health environment. Yes, light can have an effect on our health as well as our mood. Fatigue and depression are other ill effects when a person is deprived of natural light for extended periods of time.
A source of full spectrum light produces illumination that closely resembles the natural light of the sun. If you were to spend most of your time indoors full spectrum lighting would be very important to your well being. Common incandescent and fluorescent illumination usually does not match natural light.
The benefit of using proper lighting just makes good sense. You can plan to get the most light for the least cost and you can maintain good health and a positive attitude with something as simple as choosing the proper lighting.
Wait! We've spent all this time talking about the quality of light and we haven't even mentioned the creative designing possibilities of light. Or beautiful fixtures like Hubbardton-Forge lamps or Tiffany style lighting fixtures or pendants. Oh well, you'll find many other facets of home lighting covered elsewhere in these web pages.
